80% of Success is Just Showing Up

No, he’s not an Internet Guru, but he is/was somewhat of a last technology Guru.. and a very smart man. If you don’t recognise Woody Allen, I doubt you remember life without mobile phones.

Genius!.. And there’s a few reasons why. You might just think it is a nice quote, to make you feel good, but there are a couple of other things working in the background here.

First off, have you heard of the 80/20 rule?

The Pareto principle (also known as the 80-20 rule, the law of the vital few, and the principle of factor sparsity) states that, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. (Wikipedia)

Now using my illogic, that would mean that 80% of success is just showing up, but only 20% of the people do it (probably even less). If it is even faintly that easy to be successful, why can’t people get their head around it? That’s the art/science no?

The second reason why this is a genius quote is that, ‘showing up’ has a couple meanings -

• Literally just meaning to ‘turn up’
• Could be, showing up with an emphatic raison d’être, sword, shield and awesome beard and 299 other guys ready for action?

When it comes down to commentating on a sport, I have often heard people describe players in terms of ‘who showed up’, refering to the manner in which they have performed.

So the question begs, are you going to be in the 20% ready to save Sparta?… Or will you do it in a minute?
